About the Family Cases category

Anyone can post family cases here for discussion. Anyone is welcome to post, and also to discuss regardless of level of experience with Bowen Theory.

Things to strive for with presentations

(Though don’t let these keep you from posting)

  • Post your presentation as a video.
    • Upload your video to YouTube and post the link, or reach out to AFS to do so for you.
  • Include a zip file with your Family Diagram app diagram.
  • Keep the presentation as short as possible.
    • Under three minutes is ideal, though longer is also fine.
    • This will require practice to get 100% clear on the data and what conclusions you draw from it.
  • Include what you believe theory tells you about the case.
  • Include your question(s) about the case.
    • The state of the art for family evaluation is imprecise enough that every case has questions.

Suggestions for removing identifying information from cases in the Family Diagram app

  • Check Hide Names or Show Aliases from the View menu.
    • Generally speaking, names and even aliases are not required to walk through emotional process in a family using the diagram.
  • Select all people, click Inspect in the View menu, and check Hide Dates from the property sheet. This will hide specific built-in dates which tend to be pretty specific, but not ages.
    • Then do the same for marriages.
    • Re-write built-in dates (birth, adopted, death, bonded, separated, divorced, etc.) with more vague hand-written versions in the Diagram Notes field. For example only including month or year instead of day, leaving out the name of a town that was moved to.
  • Practice verbally presenting the case so as to discover what information you need
    • Aliases are often needed when presenting using tabular timeline to the right.
